Oscar in boating accident

Oscar has sustained head and facial injuries in a boating accident on the Vaal River in South Africa, although doctors have allayed fears that he will not run again.

Oscar underwent surgery today and is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit of the Millpark hospital in Johannesburg, where he was airlifted after Saturday night's accident.

"Everything can be repaired surgically," Anchen Laubscher, the principal medical officer, said. "He is fine. His brain is functioning normally. He will soon be discharged and taken home to make a full recovery."

Peet van Zyl, Oscar’s manager, said the South African sprinter still hoped to compete in the 100m and 400m races at the Paralympic World Championships in Manchester in May.

"Oscar will be back on the track sooner rather than later," Van Zyl said. "He has sustained no leg, arm or rib damage."
